After so many centuries Art history has produced thousands as not millions of "artists". There is something suitable for anybody.
I too have my favorites. There is of course a difference between people you admire and those whose ideas your trying to make yourself own (it's no "nicking", but more likely "quoting", or "citing"). Between those moral standards the distinguish isn't always obvious.
My admiration counts for amongst others the following artists; and first some information about a few painters I quote now and then. (Some with a nice (non-commercial) website are linked.)
'Composition with red, yellow and blue' by Piet Mondrian

Piet Mondrian

I love his black line paintings.
PM also created work with diagonal, 45" degree lines (just as his colleague Van Doesburg), he showed them then on the point. Brilliant!
Primary colors and grey tinged make these images are for sure timeless.
'Masterpiece' by Roy Lichtenstein

Roy Lichtenstein

What counts for the work of Mondrian counts for him, just by using curbed lines it suddenly do represents something and is found in a different corner of the "Art universe" (RL actually self has made some 'Mondrians').
'Non-Objective I' by Roy Lichtenstein
'Reproduction forbidden (portrait of Edward James)' by Rene Magritte

René Magritte

Extending visual discoveries and jokes of this Surrealist, who doesn't love that?
"Ceci n'est pas une Pipe", it don't even looks like it.

CC is an American photorealist, creating mainly 10 feet high portraits in a kind of "Mug shot" style. He finds his inspiration in experimenting with all kinds of (un)usual materials and techniques.
Lot of his work contains of just squares (some over 100.000!), which he gives the right shade of color by piece.
Unfortunately nowadays the computer makes this accessible for everyone ("I DON'T WANT TO BE RECOGNIZED!", that idea).
